As a photographer I have always been attracted to light and how to use it in my medium. Chiaroscuro in art, is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. It is also a technical term used by artists and art historians for the use of contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume in modelling three-dimensional objects and figures. Similar effects in cinema and photography also are called chiaroscuro.
One of the greatest artists whose work I simply adore is that of Caravaggio. Though Rembrandt is a very close second. Their masterly use of light is something that I still study to this day. As a photographer their artwork is an inspiration in my own work.
I truly love those high contrast scenes such as this portrait of the bride & groom backlit by the early morning sunlight in Piazza San Marco with St Mark's Basilica. The flow of the brides veil as the wind captures it and the pigeons fluttering about add the necessary drama to an otherwise simple image. The fact that their faces are quite dark (obviously no flash was used and this was a creative decision) creates more drama as the scene unfolds. I realize that many photographers would have used flash to brighten their faces. But this effect would have ruined a painterly and artistic portrait that will stand the test of time as a piece of art. It is not for everyone but for couples who are a bit more sophisticated in their taste it is an image that is worthy of their living room wall.
