Kathy and Joshua traveled from Hong Kong specifically for this cinematic pre-sunrise engagement session in Prague. From the first moments before dawn to the final frames in the afternoon, it became one of the most creatively distinctive engagement stories I’ve photographed.
The morning began in darkness along the Vltava riverside. For the opening shot, the couple stood quietly before Charles Bridge as the sky slowly brightened. Trees on both sides were illuminated with flash, framing them dramatically against the emerging light — a composition that feels more like fine art than a traditional photograph. This remains one of the most carefully composed and atmospheric images I’ve created at Park Cihelna.
The mood then shifted completely. As the sun broke over the skyline, Kathy and Joshua ran across Charles Bridge, laughing, with golden lens flare trailing across the frame—pure, unposed joy — exactly why pre-sunrise sessions are so special.
After a wardrobe change, the afternoon chapter unfolded at the Baroque Vrtba Garden. Dressed in elegant vintage clothing and carrying their own functioning vintage film camera, the couple created an intimate, timeless series — completely absorbed in each other and the stunning surroundings, with no direction or performance.
The final result is a session in two distinct acts: cinematic and dramatic at dawn, intimate and authentic in the afternoon. A beautiful reflection of who Kathy and Joshua are as a couple.

For many couples visiting from Asia for their pre-wedding, having a portrait at Park Čihelna looking towards the Charles Bridge is a must-have fine-art piece.
Capturing these kinds of free spirit images is far more enjoyable than posing couples, especially when Mother Nature is cooperating.

Photographer’s Insight: Why Vrtba Garden is perfect for a Pre-Wedding Session in Prague
Many couples planning a Prague pre-wedding or engagement session ask the same question: where should we go for our photos? Prague offers countless beautiful backdrops, but when time is limited, location choice matters. One of my favorite spots is Vrtba Garden, or Vrtbovská zahrada — a Baroque masterpiece and one of the most iconic photography locations in Prague.
Vrtba Garden is especially beautiful in autumn, when the vines turn deep red and the garden still holds rich green tones. The shorter days also create more favorable light for portraits, and from the upper terraces you can enjoy views over Malá Strana, Prague Castle, and even the spires of St. Vitus Cathedral. The combination of architecture, seasonal color, and elevated city views makes this location ideal for couples who want portraits that feel elegant, romantic, and distinctly Prague.
For couples looking for something different from the typical summer pre-wedding gallery, Vrtba Garden is an excellent choice between August and October. During this period, the light is softer, the colors are richer, and the atmosphere feels more intimate. The only drawback is that the top terrace can get crowded, so timing the session carefully is important.
